Reducing the risk of dementia

The 11 factors for developing dementia, they are increasing age, education levels, a history of depression or diabetes, a history of stroke, a family history of dementia, low levels of deprivation, raised blood pressure (hypertension), high cholesterol, living alone and being male. Carrying the gene APOE increases the risk of acquiring dementia.
While older age (60+) and APOE confer the greatest risk, there are modifiable risk factors:
- Reducing the risk of diabetes: reducing sugar and fatty foods and treating healthy) as well as increasing exercise to at least 30mins of cardiovascular exercise at least four times a week
- Reducing and managing depression: identifying depression and managing this effectively, using medication or therapy
- Reducing high blood pressure by exercise, diet and/or medication
