At Caremark Bromley, we are committed to providing compassionate, high-quality care to young people and adults with complex behaviours. We understand that individuals with autism, learning disabilities, and other challenges often experience periods of physical dysregulation, where they may struggle to control their emotions and behaviour. Our team is dedicated to not only responding to these situations with calm professionalism but also taking proactive steps to prevent crises from occurring in the first place.

A Comprehensive Approach to Training

The cornerstone of our success in reducing incidents of physical dysregulation lies in our team’s thorough and diverse training. We invest heavily in staff development to ensure they are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to manage challenging behaviours effectively.

In-House Training: At Caremark Bromley, we develop bespoke in-house training sessions tailored to the specific needs of the individuals in our care. This allows our team to build strong relationships with those we support and understand their unique triggers and behaviours. By fostering a deep understanding of each person’s needs, we can anticipate and de-escalate situations before they escalate to a crisis point.

Team Teach Training: One of the key external programs we utilise is Team Teach, a leading provider of training in positive behavioural management. Team Teach focuses on promoting de-escalation and reducing the need for physical intervention by teaching staff how to recognize the early signs of physical dysregulation. Our team members are trained to respond to these signs with techniques that prioritize de-escalation, promoting a safe and calming environment.

PMVA Training: Additionally, our team undergoes Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression (PMVA) training, which equips them with the knowledge and tools to safely manage situations where an individual becomes physically aggressive. This training ensures that our staff can intervene when necessary, but always in a way that respects the dignity and well-being of the person involved.

Our proactive approach is key to reducing incidents of physical dysregulation. By focusing on prevention, we are able to identify potential triggers and work closely with individuals to minimize their impact. This includes creating personalised care plans that are regularly reviewed and adjusted based on the person’s needs.

Environmental Adjustments: Many individuals with complex behaviours are sensitive to their surroundings. We ensure that their environment is as calming and comfortable as possible, with minimal sensory triggers. Whether it’s adjusting the lighting, reducing noise levels, or creating designated quiet spaces, these small changes can make a big difference in preventing physical outbursts.

Communication and Routine: Consistent communication and routines are also crucial in helping individuals feel safe and secure. Our carers use a variety of communication techniques, such as visual aids or simple, clear language, to ensure individuals understand what is happening and feel in control of their environment. Predictable routines help reduce anxiety, which in turn lowers the risk of dysregulation.

Handling Physical Outbursts with Professionalism

When physical outbursts do occur, Caremark Bromley’s team is trained to respond with professionalism and care. Non-violent de-escalation techniques are always our first approach, with physical interventions used only as a last resort. Our staff employs the least restrictive measures to ensure the safety of both the individual and others involved, while always prioritizing the person’s dignity.

Each incident is thoroughly reviewed to better understand triggers and adapt our care strategies for the future, helping to prevent recurrence and continually improving the support we provide.
