Happy new year to you! We are back this year with a new “Let’s Talk Hot Topic” each month and for January its “Act FAST – Stroke”. This will focus on symptoms and what you should do if a stroke should strike.

Symptoms

  • It may be hard to smile and one side of your face may drop.
  • You may not be able to fully raise both arms and keep them there because of the numbness or weakness in one arm.
  • You may suffer with speech problems. You may slur your words or sound confused.
  • You may feel weakness or numbness on one side of your body (including your leg).
  • You may suffer loss of vision or blurred vision in one or both eyes.
  • You may suddenly find difficulty speaking or thinking of words.
  • You may suffer sudden memory loss or confusion.
  • You may have a sudden and severe headache.
  • You may suddenly feel dizzy, unsteady or fall.

So “When Stroke Strikes, Act F.A.S.T. and call 999.

What does F.A.S.T. stand for?

Face – has their face fallen on one side?

Arms – can they raise both arms and keep them there?

Speech – is their speech slurred?

Time – to call 999 if you see any single one of these signs.
