Ealing Council Awarded Gold Status for its Veteran Support

Ministry of Defence gives it highest employer accreditation
Ealing Council Recognised for Supporting Armed Forces
Ealing Council has received the highest employer accreditation award from the Ministry of Defence. This prestigious recognition celebrates the council’s exceptional support for the armed forces community. Specifically, the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) gold award honours employers who go above and beyond to assist defence personnel, veterans, and their families.
Commitment to Employing and Supporting Veterans
Furthermore, the council employs veterans and actively strives to be an armed forces-friendly employer. It provides comprehensive support in key areas such as housing, education, employment, and health. Additionally, it encourages other organisations in west London to pursue their ERS accreditation, fostering a community-wide commitment.
Renewing the Armed Forces Covenant
In 2012, the council signed the Armed Forces Community Covenant. Later, on 12 October 2021, Council Leader Peter Mason renewed the covenant at the Squadron base in Southall. Importantly, this covenant ensures fair treatment for those who serve or have served in the armed forces, as well as their families.
Tackling Veteran Unemployment
Nevertheless, many veterans face unemployment rates about 50% higher than the general population, despite their valuable skills. To address this issue, Ealing Council remains committed to making its training and skills programmes accessible and relevant to veterans. Moreover, it collaborates with the voluntary and community sector to provide essential resources and support for their success in civilian careers.
Addressing Housing and Education Challenges
However, the mobile nature of military life often creates challenges for service members and their families, such as securing housing and school placements. To mitigate these issues, the council revised its housing policies to exempt armed forces personnel from residency requirements. Similarly, it updated school admissions policies to simplify placement for forces families.
A Message from Councillor Peter Mason
Councillor Mason stated, “Achieving the Gold Employer Recognition Scheme status reflects our long-term commitment to supporting the armed forces community. Indeed, we honour and remember those who serve, not just on Armed Forces Day or Remembrance Sundays, but at all times.
“This recognition, therefore, underscores our dedication to employing and supporting veterans and reservists, both within the council and beyond. Nevertheless, our work doesn’t stop with this gold accreditation. We will continue collaborating with local armed forces and partners to provide the necessary support for service members and their families. On behalf of the council, thank you to our armed forces and veterans for your service and sacrifices.”
