Dementia: What You Need to Know

Dementia is a condition that affects memory, thinking, and daily functioning, often requiring specialised care and support.

There are more than 100 types of Dementia, with the most common being:

  • Alzheimer’s Disease: Abnormal protein deposits form in the brain, causing amyloid plaques and tau tangles. It’s the most common type of dementia, and usually develops in people over 65
  • Vascular Dementia: Conditions like blood clots disrupt blood flow in the brain. It’s most likely to develop in people over 65.
  • Lewy body Dementia: Abnormal deposits of the alpha-synuclein protein affect the brain’s chemical messengers. It’s most likely to develop in people 50 or older.
  • Frontotemporal Dementia: A less common type of Dementia, sometimes called ‘pick’s disease’. Common early symptoms include changes to personality and behavior and/or difficulties with language.
