Helping Older people to eat

We all know how important good nutrition and healthy eating is, but sometimes our older relatives just don’t have the appetite, so how do we help older people to eat more?
Here are some tips to help older people eat.
Number 1, Ensure our environments are pleasant. Make sure the dining area is well-lit, comfortable, and free from distractions. Create an inviting ambiance to make mealtimes more enjoyable. And approach mealtimes with love and patience. Create a supportive, stress-free environment.
Number 2, We eat with our eyes. Introduce a variety of colourful, nutritious foods. Experiment with different textures and flavours to stimulate their senses and make meals visually appealing.
We all have busy lives, and it’s so easy to reach for that microwave meal which may not be the healthiest. Ask yourself, would you want to eat what has been served up?
Number 3, Involve them in meal choices, preparation, and cooking. Ask about their preferences, and tailor meals to their taste. This not only promotes independence but also makes eating much more engaging.
Number 4, Instead of three large meals, consider offering smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. This can be less overwhelming and may be more enticing for those with a reduced appetite.
Number 5, Consider Finger-Friendly Options. Sometimes the use of cutlery can be tricky and frustrating, cut fruits, veggies, and proteins into bite-sized pieces for easier handling.
Number 6, make meal times sociable with family or friends. Eating on our own is never fun, but eating with friends and family is.
Number 7, revisit cherished food traditions and recipes. Nostalgia evokes positive emotions and can make mealtimes more enjoyable.
