Today we are talking about how to prevent pressure ulcers aka bed sores.

Pressure ulcers, also known as bed sores, can be a serious concern for individuals with limited mobility especially those who are bed bound. But how do we prevent these painful sores?

Well, here are some tips.

1 – Encourage changing positions every 1-2 hours if possible. This helps alleviate constant pressure on specific areas of the body.

2 – Utilise specialised cushions and pillows to distribute pressure evenly and provide extra support where needed, especially in chairs and wheelchairs.

3 – Keep the skin clean and dry to reduce the risk of infection. Use mild soaps and moisturisers to prevent dryness.

4 – Conduct a daily skin check, paying attention to areas prone to pressure ulcers. Early detection allows for prompt intervention.

5 – A balanced diet rich in vitamins and nutrients supports skin health. Adequate hydration is also crucial for maintaining skin elasticity.

6 – Invest in pressure-relieving mattresses or overlays to distribute body weight evenly and minimise pressure on vulnerable areas.

7 – Choose loose-fitting, breathable clothing to reduce friction and pressure on the skin. Avoid tight seams or elastic that may cause irritation.

8 – Even for those with limited mobility, gentle exercises or range-of-motion activities can promote circulation and prevent prolonged pressure on specific body parts.

9 – Work closely with healthcare professionals to develop a care plan tailored to individual needs. They can provide guidance on preventive measures and interventions.
