Prostate cancer is a significant health concern for men around the world, yet understanding it’s nuances is key to early detection and effective treatment. In this article we talk about What is prostate cancer, what are the Symptoms, and how is it treated.

Here’s a brief overview of Prostate Cancer:

So what is it?
Prostate cancer develops in the prostate gland, a small, walnut-shaped gland located below the bladder in men. It occurs when abnormal cells in the prostate gland grow and multiply uncontrollably, forming tumours.

What causes PC?
While the exact cause of prostate cancer remains unknown, certain risk factors increase the likelihood of developing the disease. These include age, family history of prostate cancer, ethnicity (African-American men are at higher risk), and lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise habits.

What are the Symptoms?
In it’s early stages, prostate cancer may not cause noticeable symptoms. However, as the disease progresses, men may experience symptoms such as difficulty urinating, frequent urination (especially at night), blood in the urine or semen, erectile dysfunction, and pain in the hips, back, or chest.

How do we diagnose PC?
Screening for prostate cancer typically involves a combination of a digital rectal examination and a prostate-specific antigen blood test. If abnormalities are detected, further diagnostic tests such as a biopsy may be conducted to confirm the presence of cancer.

How do we treat it?
Treatment for PC depends on various factors, including the stage and aggressiveness of the cancer, as well as the patient’s overall health and preferences. Treatment options may include active surveillance, surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these approaches.

It goes without saying that early detection and prompt treatment significantly improves the success of any treatment. Regular screenings, open communication with healthcare providers, and awareness of risk factors are vital steps in the fight against this disease.
