Rallied round

When Alison Parkinson left hospital following a hip replacement operation, friends and relatives rallied round to provide support.

However, as can often be the case, they all had jobs of their own and so Alison turned to Caremark Leeds Bradford to help with some additional support during the day.

“I find the home care support marvellous, definitely one of the best things I have done,” said Alison.

“It takes such a weight off my shoulders knowing if there’s a job that needs doing which I can’t manage I can ask the carers.”

Alison has two grown up sons and two teenage granddaughters and believes the home care support also benefits them.

“They are good to me but they do fuss,” she said. “It gives the boys peace of mind to know there is someone popping in to see me each day.”

Alison, 70, who was widowed six years ago, spent her working life as an industrial chemist, developing and manufacturing personal care lotions such as hand creams.

A keen sportswoman she played hockey, netball and rugby as well as badminton which she enjoyed into her fifties before age took its toll.

“I have osteoarthritis and vertigo so I do take a tumble now and then and that’s what led to two stays in hospital and the hip replacement,” said Alison.

“The carers help me to shower and wash, tidy up, make lunch, anything really and it’s also lovely to have someone to chat with.”

Though her badminton days may be over, Alison still enjoys another passion she learned as a child, tapestry work.

“I have sewn all my life. I can’t knit now because of my joints but I can do tapestry and I’m working on a pattern I got for Christmas,” said Alison.

“I enjoy being at home, my independence is very important to me and Caremark help me to maintain that.”
