Anoxic brain injury

Charlie* is a young man with an anoxic brain injury sustained at birth. This meant his brain was completely starved of oxygen. This also led to him suffering from epilepsy and cerebral palsy.
In February 2024, Caremark Rotherham & Sheffield had the privilege to start supporting Charlie with the aim of improving his daily living, increasing his social activities, maintaining his healthy eating choices and to help him achieve his goals of being able to go on holidays and day trips away whenever he wanted, just like any other adult of his age.
We support Charlie on a 24-hour, 7 days a week basis. This consists of all his routines such as his day-to-day personal care, shopping, activities, meals, drinks, taking regular medication, keeping his home clean, and laundry.
In addition, we support in all of Charlie’s activities including going to the gym, horse riding and rock climbing.
We have introduced a consistent care team to Charlie, with whom he has built up some fantastic working relationships. From February until the present day, Charlie has ticked many things off his bucket list with our Support Workers behind him every step of the way! Here are just a few examples:
- Weekend trips away to Skegness, Lake District & Butlins.
- Day trips to Alton Towers, The Deep, & The Royal Armouries Museum.
- 90’s weekends and music festivals.
- Trips to watch horseracing.
- Concerts to watch his favourite band Blue.
- Playing darts, basketball, pool, and football with his Mencap groups where Charlie has made some amazing groups of friends.
Our dedicated Case Leader, Kirsty, maintains regular contact with Charlie’s parents and his Case Manager, who said the following about our support:
“I have found working with Caremark an absolute delight. They were efficient in setting up care for a complex package and provide consistent and clear communication throughout.
“It’s been extremely useful having a point of contact with Kirsty however I know if I ring the office there will always be a friendly voice at the end of the phone.
“All staff show a real passion for the role and care and dedication towards Charlie. Thank you for all the care and support you provide to him and his family.”
Charlie is a regular visitor to our offices in Rotherham and the whole team look forward to seeing his smiling face when he walks through the door with one of his Support Workers.
We strive to be the best that we can be for Charlie every single day and to continue helping him make more amazing memories.
