The Alzheimer’s Society suggests that in the UK one person every three minutes will develop dementia.

Dementia respects no-one. It has no sympathy for illness, for gender, for status. Dementia will touch the lives of many of us. It is estimated that in Thanet there are over 2000 people living with dementia and this figure will rise to approximately 3000 in 2026. In Kent the figures are over 22 000 people currently living with dementia, rising to over 30 000 in 2026. Nationally, it is estimated that there may be some 850,000 people living with dementia.

On Thursday 21 February, 2024 we delivered dementia awareness training Chartwell House Care Home. Kerry Hill, director of Caremark Thanet, Dover and Canterbury (and registered manager of Caremark Thanet) chairs Thanet Dementia Action Alliance and today’s brunch meeting was part of the Alliance’s aim to make Thanet dementia friendly. The training was led by Michelle Friday, Caremark Thanet, Dover and Canterbury‘s learning and training manager.

Caremark Thanet thanks to all the businesses that attended including Levicks Accountants, EKC Broadstairs College, Wards Estate Agents and Earwax Away Thanet with Kathryn.

One of the aims of the Thanet Dementia Action Alliance is to help Thanet become a dementia friendly locality. This is particularly challenging for businesses. Often, finding the right information is quite difficult. Our session today was aimed at providing businesses with information that helps them become more aware of the challenges faced by people who are living with dementia.

Further sessions will be held over the coming months. However, if you would like more information about making your business dementia friendly, contact Kerry Hill on 01843 235910 or email ketrry.hill@caremark.co.uk
